According to a report in the Joliet Herald News, a student driver struck a dog during a driving lesson last month. Then, instead of stopping, the driver's education teacher allegedly instructed the student to leave the scene of the accident.
Teacher and student sped away as the dog died in its owner's arms.

Granted, the MDH should have reported that, but I can understand the instructor's concern in trying to protect the student in light of the fact that the woman was probably screaming and frantic. One question; why was the dog's chain long enough to reach the street? Obviously the dog ran somewhere into the street. I'm sure the student didn't drive onto her lawn. People really need to keep their dogs on a short leash.
To 8:45: where do you get the idea that the dog owner was screaming and frantic or a danger to anyone? There is nothing in the article to suggest that.
The problem here is that a motorist is legally (and morally) required to stop and give aid and information after an accident - regardless of who is at fault.
And in this case, it isn't just anyone, it is the teacher who is teaching a student how to drive and should be setting an example.
I don't buy the "danger-to-the students" argument. Probably everyone in the van had a cell phone. Any one of them could have simply called the police, like any decent human being would have done.
What happened here is appalling and unconscionable behavior by the teacher. What an awful example to set for the students.
There is plenty of criticism to go around; to the teacher for his or her reprehensible conduct; to the police for not issuing a ticket; and to the Morris Daily Herald for failing to cover the story. Shame on all of you.
The safety of the students defense is bogus. If the teacher was concerned about safety they could have simply driven straight to the police department to report the accident, or gone to any safe location and called police. Apparently, the teacher decided it was better to not report the accident at all, until a reporter from the Joliet Herald came calling. Then all the sudden he got religion.

Regardless of whether the student driver was at fault or if the dog was at fault, they should have stopped immediately. They returned and talked to the pet owner only after they got caught. The teacher obviously lacks the good judgment that is required for the job, and should be disciplined.
Does anyone have to wonder why the youth of today acts the way they do? Look at the fine examples set for them. I am sorry but had the tables been turned, the "teacher" would have sued everyone involved. Just shows how double standards are tolerated at Morris High School!

Can you believe this Mike Farrel. Does he work for the DEMS or what? What is the Mayor commenting on D. Brown for? His case has nothing to do with the city of Morris. D.Brown got caught in a Dem plot. They have to get more relatives in there. D. Brown was a threat to them not only as an alderman, but they knew with the performance of the Mayor, Brown was a Mayoral threat. The Mayor goes, so does Belt and relatives. Sounds like the sheriff finally paid an old friend back and several current ones. When are people going to wake up and see what is going on. Oh, we better let Farrel know D. Brown went to Wal-Mart today too, he left before his shopping was done though. What kind of knit picking reporter is he. Is this the crap the citizens really want to hear or read about? Why isn't Farrel reporting on the $247,000 dollars that Belt has taken from the city. Wow, it paid for the Baum building for Belt. What about all the other enities he is representing. How does he get it all done. Come on Farrel this is greater news than a slimy attempt at ruining what a man built for 29 years. Where's the editor, why would you let something like this get by? Is the entire paper a bunch of DEMS? What if every Repub. stopped their paper, would the MDH still survive? Report equally. Who does it take to stop this stuff that Belt is getting by with? All I know is the resigned/retired sheriff spent plenty of taxpayer money sitting in the feed sales barn eating bon bon's.
About the drivers ed instructor leaving the scene of hitting that dog. The police department decided not to issue any ticket or violation to the instructor, even though it's against the law to leave the scene of "property damage." Why wasn't there any sort of retribution?
Could it be that football is so much more important than enforcing the law in Morris, given that the instructor is an assistant football coach?
I know I would probably get a ticket. I'm not involved in football.

I think it means Mr. Brown, not the Sheriff. Every farmer knows he sat out there like it was his living room while on duty. I'm just guessing though.

Maybe what you're saying is correct but you can't deny that he did a good service to our county during the years he served as a police office. I'm sure he isn't the only cop that slacked from time to time. It's very disturbing that so many years of service to the public can be destroyed by someone's allegations. I just find it interesting that this intern was so upset by his alleged behavior, but yet she continues her internship. I've also heard that many of the other male officers don't want to have her around as they fear the same accusations.
The driver's ed teacher who did this was a pompous ass years ago when I had him. Sound's like he hasn't changed.
