City raises taxes 11%

The Morris City Council has approved an 11% increase in city property taxes, as reported in this Morris Daily Herald article. City property taxes will increase by $187,589 to $1,961,500 - an 11% increase over the previous year.

(This isn't including the city's TIF tax, which adds $3,000,000 annually in hidden property taxes.)

City officials chant the misleading mantra that the tax rate has remained level, while imposing double-digit tax hikes on residents year after year.

According to alderman Jeff Paulson,

Your taxes (paid to the city) are going up because the value of your property has gone up,”

Really? Has the value of your home gone up by 11 percent over last year?

Well get out your wallet, because city property taxes just did.

The same old story. Our rate is the same, it is you assessed valuation that is going up. Or we are raising the rate because it has not changed in years. How about the other one, we are one of the lowest rates in the area. It all gets down to one simple thing, if I paid the city $100 last year, why do you need $111 this year? Because the lawyer and engineer get bigger raises than the police. The Mayor gets hard wood floors and silk drapes in his new mahogany office. And the "Hall of Babel" is getting built no matter what anyone says.

Every house in town lost 20% in value last year.

We have to make up for the deficit created by the Mayor's buddy not paying the rent at the airport diner. Hence the raise in taxes. Comments are coming from city hall that the city is stuck with his unpaid gas and electric bills he walked away from. Can't wait for his next big idea and how the cronies are going to fund him. Does anyone know about Scooter and the State's Attorney owning the Baum Building but avoiding legitimate building inspections. There are fire and safety code violations throughout that place.

The city council thinks people are too stupid to realize this is a huge tax increase.

It will not be long and it is time to start now. Election time means Goodbye Tricky Dickie, Scooter, and Pentameter Warren.

Rising property values are no reason to raise property taxes. The city still has to provide the same services to the same number of people.

However, if the number of homes and businesses rises, I can see a need to increase the services of police and other municipal services.

But won't the rising EAV take care of that by itself, without raising tax rates? An increase in EAV means there will be more dollars coming into the city, without having to raise the tax rate.

I say we cap the rate.

Our EAV will continue to rise, and that alone will bring us more dollars.

Sledge, is there any truth to the rumor that the county had no insurance on the snowplows and vehicles that were destroyed in the fire?

I think the county might be elf-insured.

"self insured" is just a politician's way of saying "not insured"

what kind of morons are running the county without insurance?

Anonymous said...

The morons are the republicans that started the idea years back, now they have to deal with those mistakes of the past.

People are beginning to realize that they have been lied to about city finances.

The TIF tax is needed to fund Dickie's crony machine.

They're raising taxes at the same time some NIMBYs are trying to kill the Port of Grundy County. Go figure. Taxes are going to keep going up and up and up ....

Mayor nutcup needs a new "crapper", according to Crain's Chicago Business. This explains the need for higher taxes...
