Gus Macker

Do downtown businesses really benefit from the Gus Macker basketball tournament?

No, But Missy Durkin does, it covers her salary for the year. Also i think it was shameful that the mddp and and a for-profit basketball company went around to all the local schools to pitch their product to a bunch of little kids. The principals of these schools need to let the kids and parent know that they are being pitched to by companies. You must feel like a real scumbag to go around to all the little kids to keep your little trick operating. I know the mddp is a 501c3 and their comeback is that they donate X amount of dollars back to the community. Roughly $50,000.00 last year went to local charities, but a lot of residents don't realize that the city of morris taxpayers subsidize their club $60.000.00 a year to keep it afloat. Some of the wealthiest people in town belong to this prestigious club and just a handful of them have a business downtown. They need to open up their wallets more and quit asking the taxpayers to support such idiotic crap.

No, they don't. Very little additional business occurs, but the bathrooms are needed, trash is tossed willy-nilly, streets are clogged keeping out repeat customers, and night guards have to be hired.

To be clear, Gus Macker is a for-profit company from Michigan.

There is nothing wrong with companies making a profit. But it is wrong to give people the false impression that it is a not-for-profit organization, or a charitable event.

Some businesses sales slump so badly on the Gus Macker weekend that they just shut down. Why can't this event be held somewhere else, like the high school parking lot or the high school rec center, so that local businesses don't suffer?

I think the local schools ought to let Ronald McDonald visit the kids to sell them more happy meals all in the name of sportsmanship and team work. Yea it would be great he could dance around in the gym holding a happy meal telling the kids when they get home to have their parents pick them up one for dinner.

Yes, indoctrinate them to your scheme while they're young, i love it.

This is the kind of logic you get when people who don't have a business try telling people that do, how run one. It is all very hilarious.

What a great way to sell to children while they're captive and don't even have a clue they're being sold.

The mddp has been bothering public works all week. The mayor gives them cart blanche to the citys downtown, police and public works. I just do what i'm told.

Due to complaints from merchants and residents, the cities of London Ontario, Peoria Illinois and St. Joseph Michigan have re-examined Gus Macker tournaments in their communities. Gus Macker, Inc. has also faced civil charges in New York state for failing to pay sales tax on clothing sales. How much does this tournament cost the city? There must be a lot of extra work for public works and police employees.

MDDP tried to pass a special downtown property tax district 10 years ago, but it went down in flames do to heavy opposition from building owners. So what the MDDP did was to get the mayor and city council to hand over $45,000.00 a year from all the taxpayers in the city. Which covers the cost of their secertary to promote the downtown. In my opinion this basketball event is nothing more than to tell those store owners who opposed the special tax district who's the boss downtown. The majority of DOWNTOWN owners know gus macker is costing them dollars. Besides taxpayer donations gus macker is the MDDP biggest revenue generator. So gus macker is not going anywhere anytime soon. The downtown store owners can bitch all they want. The MDDP is arrogant enough to think they know whats good for your business.

One parking spot is worth $70,000.00 a year to a downtown business. Somebody at the MDDP forgot this or just don't care.

I agree with 10:22PM. In fact last year I was told by a "city mother" that I should plant a different type of flower in front of my shop in my own personal pots! They don't see those pots this year now do they? What nerve. Don't keep your noses so far in the air, I am sick of seeing your nosehairs. I also agree with 9:39PM in that it is nothing more than a drinking festival. None of this supports good Christian values for the community. Promote more things like the Car Shows for Hospice and other Morris groups. They do an excellent job of getting people out on the street and many of them will patronize us on those evenings.

Maker has been here for 5 years, someone should survey the players. 1) Have you been to Morris Maker before this year? 2) What city or town do you live in? 3) How many times have you been back to Morris since the last Maker you attended? 4) What did you do here when you visited? That will settle the score. If people from out of the area return during the year, Great, continue with the Maker. If not, kill it!

Macker draws a lot of hoodlums to Morris.

Gus Macker opening ceremonies will include local officals driving a firetruck down Liberty Street, while toasting the event with their favorite brews!

The city hands out a ton of taxpayer money to the Morris Downtown Development Partnership. Most of the money is used for salaries and administrative expenses for the MDDP. Just one more example of wastefull spending under Kopczick.

so hendrix, was the hood's picture in the post office, or not?

Are you a Macker Backer?

Anonymous said...

nope, but the racist j***ff's probably was...or will be once he beats his wife and has sex with his daughter.

As far as Macker goes, it's the only time besides Gearhead Night that anyone under the age of 50 goes downtown (besides the bars). The damn place needs to be raized and new condos should be put up. Once Baum goes even the old ladies will stay away.

The Morris Hospital Foundation should have a ball on the main street the same weekend as Gus Macker. That way the out of towners can see how fuddy duddy our old codgers are. It really is the elite club of out town surpassing the country club clan. The fire truckers can toot their horns too!

Hey hendrix, did you follow him all the way to the post office to make sure his picture was'nt there. Or are you just guessing?

The Gus Macker tournament draws a lot of crack whores to Morris.

I'm working the Macker this weekend.

The fuddy duddy old codgers, the country club clan, have a great sense of humor, too. In speaking about the independent physicians, hospital foundation board member mentioned how unpleasant they could make things for the docs at the country club----LOLOLOL. One notable quote included, "Do you know how powerful we are?"

Macker is bad for my business. I am glad it is over. The city needs to reconsider this event, or move it to somewhere that is less disruptive. Most downtown merchants feel the same. The city needs to wake up and smell the coffee on this one. There is a lot of grumbling.

Sounds like the morris downtown merchants are being treated like the hospital physicians. "TAIL WAGGING THE DOG"

you mean girl.

I can tell Gus Macker was in town, because the back door to my business smells like urine just like the days following Cornfestival. Find a porta potty or just hold it.

The merchants who made lemonade from lemons appeared to do very well over the weekend. If everyone thought outside of the box, it could have been a very profitable weekend. I had one of the best fruit salads in a cup from a restaurant I had never been to before. But, I'll be sure to go back!

How much does the city spend on extra public works and police expenses? Public works was still cleaning up all the mess on Monday morning.

Anonymous said...

Darcy Elleson for mayor, she was the only one to publicly stand up to the bullys. The downtown is a hobby to Jim Baum anymore. He needs parking as bad as he needs twenty dollars.

So MISSY thinks these people will want to come back and buy ice cream????(per the MORRIS HERALD) I say give me a break!!! She is a joke, My hat goes off to Darcy......I am proud of you for standing up for your business. We need more of you to do so. In closing I want to ask MISSY is this the only place in town to have MACKER???

Take an honest vote from all businesses on this program. Majority should rule. City doesnt need to spend money on any outside fun days. Too much money is wasted even for Corn Fest. We have something, seems like every two weeks. It will kill the downtown for good if you use downtown for every excuse other than shopping.

What does the average business get out of Gus Maker?. How about barbershops? Lawyers, any business other than possibly a food business doesnt get anything out of this. They lose becasue custoemrs cant or wont come downtown.

The City gets to pay for the cleanup. One annual event is enough downtown. Anything else, hold it somewhere on the outskirts of town.

I avoid the downtown during Gus Macker. I am disable and I just can't get to the stores and restaurants I like. I wish they would move this event to somewhere else.
